I loved staying the night at my grandma and grandpa’s house (grammy and paw paw). My cousins were there, and if aunt Arlene was there we got the best thing EVER for breakfast…SCHMORN! (sh-morn). I guess it’s an austrian/german dish almost like crepe’s but nothing was in it. Just a thin sweet pancake type thing. It was SO good! My great g-parents on paw paw’s side came from a very small town in the Dolomite mountains, which is now part of Italy, but was originally part of Austria (then germany I think…) originally called ‘Tyrolia’ btw.
My mom would make it now and then when we stayed home from school sick, or on a sunday morning if a friend stayed over. But no one could make it like Aunt Arlene (who was actually my paw paw’s sister…NOT my aunt really lol but that’s what we called her, and she was a beautiful person. I miss her :/)
Fast forward 20+ years and I have my own house! (thanks to the grace of God…but that’s a story for another day…) My sister came over after a few weeks and stayed with us over thanksgiving with her family (two boys and hubs at that time, now I have a niece! yay!). In the morning I was thinking what to make for breakfast, and decided to fake my sister out (who had repeatedly told me she can’t replicate the recipe and was disappointed!) and say I’m making pancakes…but I made schmorn! Her eyes lit up and we both cried and told stories about it to the guys (who think we’re crazy of course) and we ate and ate and ate!
While I appreciate the original recipe (or the closest we could get, aunt arlene never wrote it down, so we all just guessed…but for the record…mine is the closest so far!!) I decided to spiff it up a bit and I made it with cinnamon! That’s the way my kids like it now. But occasionally, when it’s just me and my youngest son at home, I’ll make it the ‘old world’ way.
I wish I knew what it was called because I dont think it was really called scmorn lol I think they made that up! Or maybe it’s close to some german word that sounds like that lol. WHo knows. I hope one day I can find out. :)
