I was watching CNN and they did a short piece on sex offenders living on the streets. People are going to FREAK OUT about this, I assure you. BUT…here’s the OTHER side of the story.
No, I am NOT a sex offender. But someone close to me is. And by no means am I defending his actions or anything remotely close to that (as I am the one who put him in jail, so dont preach to me about keeping kids safe. DUH. I have 4). So hear me out before you flame me with stupid comments. Here’s the WHOLE story…
He served his time. He admitted to everything he’d done wrong. He was truly sorry for the lives he had damaged. Then he gets out and tries to keep to himself, not causing any problems. Not talking to anyone except people over the phone or people he had to to pay his rent or what have you. basically this man is a low threat is what I’m trying to say.
Only weeks into his parole, he is chased from place to place, being strong armed by police, being kicked out of places conveniently after the police visit the office. City to city this happened. Frustration takes hold as he cry’s to me ont he phone, ‘why wont they just let me alone. They know where I am. I have a leg bracelet on.” The managers telling him ‘sorry, I have no choice. You were a great tenant and I’m sad ot see you go.’ over and over.
As he tells me these things, i realize THAT is why so many sex offenders vanish off radar. That’s why they run. That’s why they dont register. Because if they do, people will chase them off. They’re just trying to live their life and try to move on. Now…some dont do what they are supposed to, and some will offend again. That is a reality. So WHy chase them all out giving them no other option than to run?? And as a parent (and also a recovering of child sexual abuse, by more than one person…) I understand the importance of keeping them away from our children. I’m not stupid to that fact. My point is, that if they keep chasing them around forcing them out of their town, where else are they going to go? Why WOULD they register, knowing that it’s gonna happen! Over and OVER!!!???
I dont know about you, but as a parent, I would much prefer that they be allowed to live in motels near my house in large groups than to have them live next door to me and not know it because they didnt register and moved out of state trying to just LIVE their lives.
Now, again, I’m talking about 90% of sex offenders being low risk to offend again, not the -10% that will or are dangerous. THOSE are the ones that need to stay in jail. I’m talking about the ones who get it and learned their lesson and DONT want to go back to jail and will do anything to prevent it.
Police are abusing their powers. PO’s are not doing thei jobs properly because there are SO many of them to keep track of. Why? Because police find stupid reasons to send them back to jail, adding more time to their sentence and parole once they get out. Not only adding to the work load, but also our pocket books.
And until this problem is exposed and FIXED, the problem will continue in this cycle.
